Drawing, painting and creating art has been the way I learnt to express myself even before I could read or write. I have always had a strong appreciation for art and the importance it has in our lives.
Having attended art school in South Australia straight after high school, I spent a few years immersing myself in all things art. Afterwards, while working in a small Art and Craft gallery, I decided to pursue a career in Interior Design. I completed a Bachelor of Interior Design at Uni SA and gained work with a multi award winning design firm. This gave me an appreciation of the impact art can have in a space and the importance light and colour has in our everyday environment.
Marriage and children enriched my life and changed my direction. Art remained a focus, and I returned to enjoying a greater freedom when creating pieces.
Using mainly acrylic on canvas I create art to reflect my positive outlook on life, with an impetus that it may facilitate others to experience or be moved so that they too can sense the beauty of the world around them.
I love to use bold colour to excite and stimulate the viewer. I endeavour to capture the excitement of life on my canvas.
I will be forever creating art as it is part of who I am, and I look forward to constantly evolving and developing my art.
My teenage years were spent documenting day to day life in personal diaries and teaching myself photography. I had won two cameras in the space of six months and saw this as a sign that a career in photography was my destiny. It followed suit that my first full time job was with a professional photographic printing lab; it was fabulous grounding for assessing colour and appreciating paper types. I studied Cert IV in Photography at College and graduated gaining work as a commercial photographer.
A move sideways saw me transition to the advertising industry concentrating on ad production and design layout. I didn’t realise at the time (but do now) that this work played a large part in forming my style of framing images and working with negative space. The advertising work evolved into office management, and it was at this time that I put the camera down in a professional sense.
From 1992-1997 I lived and worked in London, honing my office management skills. I returned to Adelaide in 1998 and continued in this vain until 2014 when I realised I was empty - creatively barren. By then I had developed a business enterprise named ‘Kick It To Me’ with five businesses under the umbrella. I was worn out and lacking direction, so I put them all to bed and returned to my roots. Wa-la! Kick It To Me Photography was born, concentrating on professional sports imagery. During the onset of COVID-19, with sport experiencing a hiatus, I expanded into fine art imagery. The drive and ambition returned.
I am influenced by photography of the 1960s and 70s, like that of Astrid Kirchher and Linda McCartney, both known for their association with The Beatles. The music of The Beatles and they, as individuals, are great inspiration. Four working class lads with their respective creative talents and desires, pursuing a dream, refusing the norm. I get that.
I am fascinated with human nature. This life intrigues me, so I create from a place of wonder.
