The Story Behind the Exhibition

The story begins 28 March 2020 when Showdown 48 is scheduled to take place, a match which sports photographer Sue McKay dubbed “the Showdown that never was”. With COVID-19 restrictions in place, sporting fixtures across Adelaide were halted. Instead of photographing action that evening, Sue took to photographing the stillness of the night sky and created an image in which the game of AFL is represented by the nature surrounding her. When fellow artist and long-time friend Nella De Pizzol saw the result she purchased a large framed print. This was the catalyst for the two friends to talk more about art and inspire each other’s craft. It has led to Sue and Nella partnering in their first major exhibition as part of the 2021 SALA Festival.

About the Artists

Nella De Pizzol (nee Luca) and Sue McKay (nee Girardi) met as nine year olds in primary school. Their 45 year friendship extends to present day.

Nella produces art using mainly acrylic paint on canvas. Her works are bold, exciting, visually stimulating, and designed to reflect her positive outlook on life. Nella has previously exhibited in the SALA Festival as part of a community group.

Sue is a professional sports photographer whose work has been published internationally. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Sue exhibited online for her first SALA Festival in 2020.

In 2020 conversations during Nella and Sue’s coffee catch ups turned to art more than ever before. They spoke of their admiration for the other’s work, acknowledged the courage it takes to share one’s art with the general public, and they inspired each other to do just that. The result is a joint exhibition, the visual extravaganza titled Here Comes The Sun, as part of the 2021 SALA Festival.
